Marion Jones to Compete in 100 Meters Race After 11 Month Absence

11 May 2006

Former Olympic gold medal sprinter Marion Jones of the United States will compete for the first time in 11 months when she races in the 100 meters against compatriot and former world champion Torri Edwards in Veracruz, Mexico.

Her manager, Charles Wells, said Wednesday that Jones is looking forward to the event on Saturday and "is hoping to run a good race."

Jones, 30, has not competed since finishing fourth in the 100 meters in Monterrey, Mexico on June 11, 2005. Though she won five medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics including three gold, Jones has not run well since the birth of her child with former world record holder Tim Montgomery of the United States in June of 2003.

Though he has denied taking performance enhancing drugs, Montgomery was banned from the sport for two years and stripped of his 100 meter record in December by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for banned substances provided by California laboratory BALCO. He announced his retirement in December.

The couple separated last year and Jones also has been under scrutiny by USADA but has never been charged.
