Michael Johnson says Bolt could break his 400m record too

American legend, Michael Johnson, who at the beginning of the season tipped countryman Jeremy Wariner to break his 400-metres World record, is now backing Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt to lower the mark, after watching him erased his 200m record.

Bolt produced a stunning run of 19.30-seconds to break Johnson 12-year-old 200m world record of 19.32secs, and after watching the performance live from the commentary box, the American said his quarter-mile world best could also fall to the Jamaican as well.

"Congratulations, Usain Bolt! It's incredible," Johnson was quoted as telling news wire service Reuters.

"It leaves you speechless but yes, I did (think he would break my record). He needs to set himself some other goals. He could be world record holder in 100, 200 and 400."

Johnson, retired, won the 200m and 400m double at the 1996 Atlanta Games. He followed Bolt's performances everyday inside the Bird's Nest Stadium, but felt none of them were as outstanding as 8th race, which broke his previous 200m best in a headwind.

"He finished up in an incredible time. This was an incredible performance, he wanted that record," he said an interview with BBC.

"He got an incredible start. I looked at his start and just went wow. It was more amazing than the 100 metres.

"He wanted that record. This is his favourite event, he went for it, he came in focused on it, knowing he would most likely win the gold.

"My concern was he would not have the ability to hold that speed for the entire race but he showed he has been working on that. He used every ounce of energy, he wanted that record," Johnson added.
