Olympic Games 2008: Campbell-Brown, Felix safely through opening 200m heats

Defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica eased into the next round of the women's 200m dash after she finished first in her heat in a patient 23.04 seconds here in Beijing Tuesday morning.

The Jamaican who was not involved in the 100m after failing to make the top three at the Jamaica championships in June, came home just ahead of Kadiatou Camara (MLI) 23.06.

American world champion Allyson Felix, the woman that is expected to battle hard with Campbell-Brown for the Olympic crown, also looked impressive when winning the opening heat in 23.02.

The fastest of the morning was however, USA's Muna Lee with a swift 22.71 to take heat two just in front of Frances' Muriel Hurtis-Houairi (22.72) and Cayman Islands' Cydonie Mothersill (22.76).

Jamaicans Sherone Simpson (22.94) and Kerron Stewart (23.03) who both shared the silver medal in the 100m after a photo finish failed to separate them, also made it through to the next round.

American Marshevet Hooker (23.07) also won her heat over Bahamian defending bronze medal winner Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie (23.22).

Ukraine's Nataliya Pyhyda ran a personal equalling best of 22.91 when beating Simpson in the final heat.

Meanwhile, the impressive collegiate champion Brittney Reese of USA leaped 6.87m to lead all qualifiers in the women's Long Jump finals.

Also going through were Brazil's Maurren Higa Maggi (6.79m), Ukraine's Lyudmila Blonska (6.76m), Sweden's Carolina Klüft (6.70m), as well as Russian Triple Jump silver medallistTatyana Lebedeva (6.70m) and Jamaica's Chelsea Hammond (6.60m)
