Former world record holder Jackson backs Robles to win 110m hurdles in Beijing

12 August 2008

By Gary Smith

Former world record holder Collin Jackson believes Dayron Robles of Cuba will win the men's 110 metres hurdles event at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

A demanding battle has been slated in the event between Robles, the current world record holder and China's Liu Xiang, the former, but Collins said that the Cuban consistency throughout the season has given him a big edge.

"I'll always look for Robles, with the times he's run this year, as consistent as he's been, as fluent as he's been," Jackson told reports on Monday. "I'd definitely call him the winner."

Although Robles has been setting the world alight this year and commented that he still has room for improvements in Beijing, Jackson does not expect the 21-year-old to go much fast this term.

"I really think (Robles) is at the ceiling," Jackson said. "His leg speed is incredible, he maintains it very well, (and) how much more leg speed he can gain is a question, but I'd say not much."

Robles has produced five of the world's top six times this season, including his world record of 12.87seconds and a solid 12.88, which are among four of the five sub-13 seconds performances in the campaign.

Liu, one of the hosts' best hopes of winning a track and field gold medal, on the other hand has been struggling to find his form following a number of injury setbacks.

His best time this season of 13.18secs is the slowest he has run in seven years.

A win for Robles in Beijing would definitely be a heartbreaker for all Chinese athletics supporters, who are gunning for a big celebration after the finals.

One report suggested last week that should Liu fail to win gold on his home soil then all his prior achievements would have been in vein.
