Crawford targets Beijing 200m gold

American sprinter Shawn Crawford, the 2004 Athens Olympic Games 2004 champion, says he would love for people to stop calling him the defending Olympic champion.

"I don't have to defend the 2004 gold medal," Crawford told reporters at the U.S. training camp on Wednesday. "I have that.

"The goal now is to win the gold medal that Beijing organisers will hand out August 20."

Jamaica's 100 metres world record holder Usain Bolt has dominated the event all season, but Crawford still believes the race is wide open.

"The race is up for grabs for anybody," Crawford said.

He, however, acknowledged the dominance of the Jamaican thus far.

"[Bolt's] one of the best athletes out there now," the American trials 200m runner up said. "You've got to train like you are on a mission to take him out."

Bolt, on the back of a stunning 19.67 seconds personal best this year, owns the three fastest 200 metres times for 2008 in addition to his 9.72 100m world record.

Crawford's quickest this year is 19.86, achieved at the U.S. trials when finishing behind Walter Dix, who also ran the same time.
