Chambers is Britain sprint champion

12 July 2008

Troubles sprinter Dwain Chambers won the final of the 100m British Olympic trials with an impressive time of 10.00 seconds on Saturday.

Chambers made a slow start but came from behind to beat Simeon Williamson, who secured his position on the plane to Beijing with a second place time of 10.03 – a new lifetime best.

30-year-old Chambers is seeking a high court injunction next Wednesday to lift his lifetime Olympic ban for drug offences.

UK Athletics is due to announce Team GB on Monday, but they may now delay the announcement of 100m squad until after Wednesday’s high court ruling.

Should Chambers be successful in the high court he is likely to be joined by Williamson and Craig Pickering, who finished in third in 10.19.

"It was hard work," a jubilant Chambers said moments after the victory.

"I'm just glad I've done my part of it and hopefully next week things will go well.

"I just tried to keep my head clear. My biggest fear was messing up. I just had to keep cool. I'm so happy."

If Chambers is unsuccessful in the high court his place is likely to go to Tyrone Edgar, who finished in fourth.

Jeanette Kwakye showed the type of form that took her to World Indoor silver earlier this year with victory in the 100m. Despite Emma Ania being the more fancied athlete based on 2008 performances so far, Kwakye dominated the afternoon’s semis and final –- taking the title with a lifetime best of 11.26 ahead of Montell Douglas (11.35) and Laura Turner (11.36). Ania finished fourth in 11.40.
