Jamaican sprinter takes World Junior 100m crown

9 July 2008

Jamaican sprinter Dexter Lee won the 100-meter sprint in 10.40 seconds Wednesday at the world junior championships.

The 17-year-old Lee outpaced Wilhelm van der Vyver of South Africa, who finished second in 10.42, and Terrell Wilks of the United States, who ran a 10.45.

"It feels good to get one over on the Americans," said Lee, who won the World Youth title last year.

"I knew I could win this race, I’m not too surprised," he said. “It’s been my goal to be World junior champion and now my next big goal is to make the Olympic team one day,” he added.

In the girl's 100, 18-year-old Jeneba Tarmoh of the United States won in 11.37. Ashlee Nelson of Britain was second in 11.49, and Sheniqua Ferguson of the Bahamas was third in 11.52.
