Donavon Bailey says only perfection will stop Bolt in Beijing

23 July 2008

By Gary Smith

Former Olympic champion Donavon Bailey believes it is going to take something flawless from one of the world's top sprinters to stop Usain Bolt from winning the Olympic title next month.

Bailey, a Jamaican-born Canadian sprinter said with the power that Bolt has shown in both the middle and at the end of races, the like of Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay will have to deliver something perfect from the start and hold on to it to see off the world record holder

"For Tyson or Asafa to beat Usain, they would need to have a flawless start and a flawless acceleration phase and still stay relaxed," Bailey was quoted as saying in an SI.com article.

"You know he's coming, and even if you get one meter ahead -- even two meters ahead -- he can make that up in three or four strides."

Bolt, a specialised 200m runner who won the silver medal at the World Championships in Osaka last year, broke Powell's previous 100m world record of 9.74seconds when he blasted to 9.72secs to win at the Reebok Grand Prix on May 31.

Bolt only decided to run the 100m after he and his coach Glen Mills made a deal last year. Mills told the sprinter that if he broke the Jamaican 200m national record, he would allow him to race in the shorter distant.

The 21-year-old went on to accomplish the feat at the national championships and his heart desire was granted. Bolt has since improved that mark from 19.75secs to a sizzling 19.67secs.
