Bahamian Atkins targets sub-10 seconds in Ostrava

11 June 2008

By Gary Smith

Bahamian World silver medallist Derrick Atkins is looking forward to running fast at the Thursday's Zlata Tetra Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Atkins, however, would not predict a time in which he would run, but said he felt great and sub-10 seconds was possible.

At the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway on Friday, the Bahamian ran a slight wind-aided time of 9.98-secs for victory, following a sluggish start, and he is hoping for another performance in that area in Ostrava.

"I definitely feel great," he said in a press conference for the meeting at the Hotel Atom on Monday. "But I cannot say what for time I can achieve. It can be great to run sub 10s again."

The Ostrava track is not known for sub-10 seconds, as only Asafa Powell, who holds the meet record of 9.85 has managed to break that barrier, but a confident Atkins wants to join the list.

"It would be perfect if I can get on the list of great runners who ran here."

On his possible competition for the title, he said: "It does not matter who is in the race. I try to concentrate on the competition and my performance."

The meeting will be the final before he competes at the Bahamian Nationals. He said unlike other countries with a vast amount of world-rated sprinters to choose from, the trials in his native will not be too hard for him to book a ticket to Beijing.

“It is not as tough as in the US trials. I need to get in first three in Bahamas and to run A-limit once.”

Atkins finished between American Tyson Gay and Jamaican Asafa Powell in the 100m at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan last summer for a silver medal.
