IAAF gives backing to Greene

16 April 2008

The IAAF has put its support behind a suddenly embattled Maurice Greene after recent allegations that he used performance-enhancing substances.

The track and field's world governing body has come to the support of the former Olympic medal winner, the New York Times reported on its website.

A two-time gold medal winner at the 2000 Sydney Games and former world record holder in the 100 meters, Greene came under suspicion over the weekend as the New York Times reported that an informant for a federal case against track coach Trevor Graham said that he provided the sprinter with drugs.

Angel Guillermo Heredia, who is expected to be a key witness in the upcoming trial against Graham, revealed to federal agents and the New York Times that he supplied advice and drugs to several sprinters, including a dozen Olympic medal winners.

Graham is headed to trial after pleading not guilty to three felony counts of lying to government investigators about Heredia and drugs, the reported stated. Along with Heredia, some athletes are expected to be called as witnesses, but not Greene.

Despite the claims, the IAAF has put its backing behind Greene, who has denied any use of drugs.

The former sprinter, who retired from track in February, was appointed an official ambassador for the sport earlier this year.

Greene acknowledged Sunday in The Daily Telegraph that he had met with Heredia but that he did not receive or use any performance-enhancing drugs.

However, Greene did tell the newspaper that he had paid for unknown materials for unidentified people in the past, a very questionable act considering the position that he was in.

"I would pay for stuff and not care what it was," he told the Daily Telegraph. "I've paid for things for other people without questioning it, done it plenty of times."
