Chambers receives Berlin backing

11 April 2008

The organiser of Berlin's Golden League event believes drug cheat Dwain Chambers may be welcomed at European meetings from next year.

The 30-year-old Londoner, is pursuing a rugby league career with Castleford but may still return to athletics.

Gerhard Janetzky wants a "cooling off" period which could see Chambers competing in European events next year.

He said: "If he does well this year and is back in the doping control system, I would be happy if he comes to Berlin."

Chambers is not eligible to compete in the Olympics under British Olympic Association (BOA) rules debarring drug offenders from the team.

But Chambers has not ruled out challenging the BOA bylaw in the High Court.

Janetzky confirmed he will abide by a Euromeetings consortium recommendation for the forthcoming meeting on 1 June.

It proposed members should refuse entries to athletes who have committed serious anti-doping violations since 2003.

That was the year Chambers tested positive for the designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) leading to a two-year suspension.

"We have an internal policy not to invite an athlete who comes back from a doping suspension for another year," Janetzky added.

"We don't want the negative doping topic to get into our event. This distracts from the sport.

"That is why we have to have a cooling-off-period. And I think one year makes sense."

Chambers still has to repay much of the 100,000 GBP prize money he earned at meetings under the International Association of Athletics Federation Golden League banner.

Janetzky also revealed if Chambers did appear again he would take that into account regarding appearance fees.
