Devonish plans to run until 2012

18 March 2008

Sprinter Marlon Devonish hopes to extend his career until the London Olympics in 2012.

The 32-year-old was part of Britain's gold-medal winning 100m relay team at the Athens Olympics and says a Games on home soil would be the perfect finale.

"It'll be perfect for me to finish my career in 2012," Devonish told BBC Radio Berkshire.

"To finish in London in front of a home crowd, you couldn't ask for more. So the plan is to continue running."

Devonish enjoyed a renaissance in 2007, setting a new personal best over 100m of 10.06 seconds and winning both the UK 100m and 200m crowns.

The Coventry-born athlete finished sixth in the 100m final at the world championships in Osaka and came home from Japan with 4x100m bronze.

"As I'm getting older, I seem to be getting quicker," said Devonish, who trains at Brunel University in Middlesex with coach Tony Lester.

"It was my best year to date last year. Training's going very well so I want to continue for as long as I can."

"My motivation is as strong as it's ever been."

vonish added his name to a group of Britain's elite athletes who want to finish their career at the London Games.

Marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe regards 2012 as a "realistic ambition" while heptathlete Kelly Sotherton is also targeting London.

"A lot of my greatest performances have been in the UK so I know it would spur me on to do something special," Devonish added.

"So if I'm there, I'll be needing every person in that crowd to be pushing me through."
