Gay, Powell clash possible

19 March 2008

By Dave Ungrady

U.S. sprinter Tyson Gay, the 100- and 200-meter world champion, and Jamaica's Asafa Powell, the 100-meter world record holder, could face each other twice between now and the 2008 Olympics.

Paul Doyle, Powell's agent, told Reuters today that the runners are thinking about racing in IAAF Golden League or Grand Prix races in Europe. "They are definitely going to race before the Olympics, maybe even twice," Doyle said. "We are just trying to figure out when and where."

Reports indicate that Gay does not plan to run in Europe until after the U.S. Olympic Trials, which end July 6. Mark Wetmore, Gay's agent, confirmed talks were under way but said nothing was finalized. "Tyson has been saying since November that he wants to run against Asafa before the Olympics," he said.

Possible races in Europe include the Paris Golden League meet on July 18 and Super Grand Prix competitions in Stockholm on July 22, London on July 25 and Monaco on July 29.
