Fasuba powers home to take world 60m title in Valencia

7 March 2008

Nigerian world-leader and pre-race favourite Olusoji Fasuba ran home with the menís 60m dash title at the IAAF World Championships in Valencia, Spain on Friday to cement his dominance in the event this season.

Fasubaís powerhouse finish helped him to the line another fast time, a blistering 6.51secs with which dismissed the challenges posted by his other rivals.

Great Britainís Dwain Chambers and St Kitts and Nevisí star sprinter Kim Collins took the other medals on the day.

Both sprinters ran to the line in the same time of 6.54secs, before in the Palau Velodromo stadium tonight.

Chambers had to wait for almost five minutes before learning he had edged Collins for the silver medal. The performance equalled the 29-year-old life time best and he said, despite not winning the gold he is still happy.

"I was under a lot of pressure. I wanted to go and win and I canít complain with a PB. I would like to have won but the better man won on the day," He told BBC on the night.

Speaking about his chances of making a full return to the track, Chambers said he will just have to take it as it comes.

"There may not be a comeback. As I said earlier this is my Olympic Games, Iíve got my medal, Iím happy and letís hope thereís a chance for me to move forward. If not, then Iíll pursue a career elsewhere.

"I just want to relax from here first, check my situation and check if itís worth appealing and if thereís a chance of me winning then itís something Iíd consider but for now I just want to celebrate with my team-mates and go and have some fun.

"Rules are the rules and Iím no exception from that. I failed to follow the rules and Iíve been punished and itís something Iíve got to deal with.

"Hopefully things will change, if not for me then for people in the future."
