Question Time for UK Athletics and Dwain Chambers

17 February 2008

By David Walsh

1. Why did UK Athletics (UKA) allow Dwain Chambers to make his initial comeback in 2006 without such a fuss and then spark one of the biggest controversies second-time around?

2. If UKA is taking such a hard stance against drugs, why did it not stick to its guns and prevent Chambers from competing in its trials? He claims he has no money, so why not take him on in court?

3. Why make such a furore about selecting Chambers after he met all the qualifying criteria yet pick another drugs cheat, Carl Myerscough, in the shot put, when he did not even compete at the trials?

4. UKA has suddenly announced an of? cial review of its antidoping rules to be led by Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson. Is it just coincidence it has happened on the back of Chambers?

5. In 2006, Chambers was ordered to pay back ?120,000 of past earnings if he wished to return to the sport. How much of it has he paid back and how does UKA expect to recoup the money if he is being excluded from top meetings and sponsors will not touch him?

6. Chambers insists he never announced he was retiring from athletics when he left in 2006 for American football. But why then did he not respond when UKA wrote to him to tell him he was off their of? cial drugs-testing register?

7. Why does Chambers still speak to Victor Conte, the founder of Balco, the company whose steroid Tetrahydrogestrinone sparked his downfall?

8. How can Chambers remain at the forefront of the sport internationally when he is being blocked from competing against world-class opposition at any Grand Prix meeting?

9. Why has Chambers made a comeback, insisting he is clean, when he had previously said you can only win on drugs? Is he competing to ? nish second?

10. Will a Chambers gold at the world indoor championships in Valencia be considered a genuine medal when the UKA is totally against the sprinter running in Spain?
