“I am not comfortable with these crooks” - Gardener wants Chambers out

7 February 2008

Jason Gardener, the former World Indoor 60m champion and Olympic relay gold medallist, has sided with UK Athletics on the subject of keeping sprinter Dwain Chambers from where the British colours again.

Gardener, who retired from the sport last year and his now working with the Youth Sport Trust in the UK, is not in favoured of Chambers making his second comeback after a doping ban at Britain’s world indoor national championships.

"I am not comfortable with these crooks," Gardener was quoted as saying on Telegraph. "I’m not comfortable with cheating. I don’t want to see cheats welcomed back too readily.

"They damage the sport and a price has to be paid. The key is that if you have been taking a steroid for a number of years, you are still going to benefit from having had it in your system. I’ve been on the harsh end of all this because I have been denied finals and medals by a vast number of athletes who’ve since tested positive.

"I fully understand and support the stance taken by UK Athletics but it will have to work with the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Association of Athletics Federations on a global policy that stands up.

He added: "You are not going to eradicate cheating but let’s make the punishment severe, to stop athletes even thinking about it."
