Chambers faces legal fight with British governing body

2 February 2008

Dwain Chambers cruised to the 60-meter qualifying time for the indoor British trials on Saturday, and headed for a battled with the national team’s governing body.

Chambers, who served a two-year ban for doping, won in 6.60 seconds in the final of the Birmingham Games at the National Indoor Arena. However, UK Athletics said he must be drug tested for a year before being considered for the British team.

His time is good enough for a spot at the UK Trials at Sheffield next weekend, and Chambers also wants to run at the indoor World Championships next month.

UK Athletics said he cannot compete in its championships or trials because he has not been drug tested since his ban ended two years ago. UKA said Chambers must be drug tested for a 12-month period.

His lawyers said they will take legal action against UKA if he is excluded from the trials.

“I never took myself off the drugs register at all,” Chambers said. “It was their (UKA) decision and unfortunately because of that, it has left both of us in a sticky situation.”

Chambers announced his return last month after he failed to start a career in pro football as a wide receiver with the Hamburg Sea Devils.

“I never said I am retiring,” Chambers said. “I am back on the register and about three weeks ago I was tested. I always kept the (world governing body) IAAF informed about where I was.”
