Carter beats Bolt; Richards, Isinbayeva stay in jackpot hunt in Zurich

7 September 2007

American Xavier X-Man Carter showed that he still is one of the best 200-metre runners of this era when he defeated a strong field to take that event at the Weltklasse Zurich, IAAF Golden League meeting in Switzerland on Friday.

Carter clocked a fast 19.92 to take the event over Jamaican World silver medallist Usain Bolt, who looked well tired in the home straight, after running a sizzling curve.

Meanwhile Sanya Richards kept her hunt alive for a share of the $1 million dollar jackpot prize by winning the women’s 400m without any challenges in 49.36.

“Entering the final straight I didn’t know they were so far behind,” said Richards, who remained in contention for the $1 million Golden League Jackpot.

“It was mentally tough for me tonight but I was ready to pull out a great victory.”Jamaica’s Novlene Williams was a distant second in 50.85, while Briton world champion Christine Ohuruogu, clocked 51.32 for fourth.

Another big name, Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia also kept her hopes alive in the jackpot chase by taking the Pole Vault with a leap of 4.80 metres on the last try.

“Something bad technically was happening,” said Isinbayeva, the world record holder in the event who retained her world title in Osaka, Japan. “I’m lucky to get this over with.”

In the meantime, American world champion Michelle Perry crashed out of the jackpot chase after she was defeated by Sweden’s Susanna Kallur in the 100 meters hurdles.
