Well beaten in Osaka, Bolt says Gay was the better man

2 September 2007

By Gary Smith

Jamaica’s World Junior 200-metre record holder Usain Bolt, who finished second to American new sprint king, Tyson Gay at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan last week, said he was simply beaten by a better man.

Bolt clocked 19.91-seconds to take the silver behind Gay’s sizzling 19.76 championships record time and though he did not win the gold medal, the Jamaican was satisfied with his effort, especially after his disappointments in Helsinki, in 2005.

“I think I did pretty well, but I would have liked to win the gold,” Bolt said after his spirited run at the Nagai Stadium last Friday.

“Tyson (Gay) was the better man on the day, but hopefully next time I will get him.”

Gay matured well at the last half of the 2006 season to dominate the sprint events in 2007 - beating even Jamaican world record holder Asafa Powell on his way to claiming an illustrious sprint double.

The American topped his championships outing off with a gallant third leg run, which helped the U.S. secured the 4?100m relay title in 37.78. Powell finished fast to lead the Jamaicans to a national record and silver medal place
