Powell wants rematch with Gay

30 August 2007

After surrendering a lead and losing to American Tyson Gay in the 100-metres at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan, Asafa Powell is already thinking about a quick rematch.

The Jamaican world record holder has been confirmed for Memorial Van Damme Grand Prix meeting in Bruxelles and his manager Paul Doyle said that is where the big guns will more than likely meet again.

“As soon as he (Powell) crossed the finish line, he was thinking about that (a rematch),” Doyle was quoted as saying this week.

“Asafa is definitely running Brussels (on September 14) and that’s where they will likely meet up for the first time,” Doyle said.

Gay, who clocked a blistering 9.85 seconds in a head-wind to take his first global title, was also eager to race against the top sprinters in the world again.

“I want to race everyone in the world,” the U.S. sprinter said after winning his first global title. “I believe we’ve got a great rivalry coming along.”

In the finals in Osaka, Powell faded to third in 9.96 after giving up and allowed Bahamian Derrick Atkins to past him and take the silver in 9.91.
