Gay’s constant World record talks worries Carol Lewis

12 August 2007

By Gary Smith

Former American Long Jumper Carol Lewis believes the in-form Tyson Gay needs to concentrate more on just running fast, rather than focusing solely on breaking the 100-metre World record every time he steps on the track.

Lewis made the comment at the IAAF Super Grand Prix meeting in Crystal Palace on August 3, while doing commentary and watching the 2007 world best sprinter winning the dash.

“It concerns me a little bit that he (Gay) talks so much about the World record,” Lewis, the younger sister former world and Olympic champion Carl Lewis said.

Lewis, however, said that Gay is currently head and shoulders above the sprinters this season, after blazing two world leading times of 9.84 (100m) and 19.62, the second fastest time ever for 200m.

However, the former world bronze medallist believes most world-class sprinters run their fastest when they are not fully focused on the event it self. She note, though that Gay might just be of different talent - noting that sprinter has been having an exceptional season.

“Most of the time when you try too hard it (running very fast) just does not happen,” Lewis said.

“It just seems like most of the athletes when they do run extremely is when they’re not feeling well or when they are not even thinking about running fast.

“But Tyson Gay has been proving every one wrong,” she added.

Jamaican Asafa Powell currently holds the record of 9.77-sec and he and Gay will come head-to-head for the first time this season at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan, which starts on August 25.
