8 August 2007

American World and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner produced a world-class personal best of 43.50 to win the men’s 400m and collect a piece of the one-carat-diamonds at the IAAF Super Grand Prix DN-Galan in Stockholm on Tuesday.

Coming to Sweden the American who will be defending his 400m title from Helsinki in Osaka, this month, said he wanted the run sub 44-seconds and that he did as he showed that he will be the man to beat when the championships begins.

Wariner dismissed the challenges of his fellow American teammate Kerron Clement, who clocked a personal best of 44.48 for second and Darold Williamson (44.90).

Meanwhile World record-holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica failed to improve his stadium record of 9.86 from last year, but managed to win the race in a time of 10.04. Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas was second in 10.05, while Pan American Games champion Churandy Martina from the Netherlands Antilles took third in 10.16.

The women’s race went to American World Indoor champion Me’Lisa Barber in 11.03. Sanya Richards ran a new personal best of 11.05 for second place.
