Now in the best shape of his life - Gay believes it’s time for the WR to go

2 August 2007

American sprint double world-leader Tyson Gay believes he is in the best shape of his life and has said he will be going for the world record of 9.77-seconds in the 100-metres every time steps on the track.

After rain prevented him from getting close to the mark the last time he was on British soil at the Sheffield Grand Prix, earlier this year, Gay is hoping the weather will be more favourable as he tries to break his 2007 arch rival, Asafa Powell world mark.

“I’m going after the World record every time I run,” Gay told the press at the the meet conference this week.

“I’m not really thinking about it,” he added, when asked about his intentions to improve the mark on Friday. “I just think everybody wants it. I run my own race and then hopefully run a fast race.”

The 24-year-old will race against the likes of Briton’s Marlon Devonish, who crowned himself national sprint double champion at the weekend, Craig Pickering and Olympic silver medallist Francis Obikwelu in what is expected to be a good competition.

However, the American was disappointed that Powell was not on the list of competitors for the event.

“I was kind of shocked that (Powell) didn’t show up here in London,” Gay said Wednesday. “I think it’s just going to make it more exciting, waiting for Osaka. That’s what I’d really prefer to do because when I step on the track to race, I want to be ready, 100 percent.

“Really focused — no knee problems, no mental problems. I really want to be 100 percent before I step on the track against him.”
