Sanya Richards targets fast times at DN Galan Grand Prix

31 July 2007

American IAAF World female Athlete-of-the-Year, Sanya Richards, wants to improve her personal best in the 100-metres when she competes in a rare 100m and 400m double at the DN Galan, at Stockholm Olympic Stadium Tuesday, 7 August.

Richards, the World Championships silver medalist from Helsinki in 2005, said she wants to better her personal best of 11.28, set in Austin, TX, in 2003.

“It is time for me to better my personal best of 11.28 from 2003,” Richards, who has been having an excellent second half-season so far, said.

Richards, who has a world 2007 best time of 49.52 in the 400m, is also targeting the Stockholm Olympic Stadium record too in the that event, which is her specialty.

“I would like to set a new stadium record in the 400 metres at the DN Galan and get a diamond,” the Jamaican-born American sprinter said.

“I saw the one Jeremy Wariner got last year, (44.02 for a new 400m stadium record) and it is very beautiful.”

The former World Junior 200m and 400m champion missed out on running the quarter-mile at the upcoming world championships in Osaka, Japan, after finishing fourth a the U.S. Championships, because of an illness which prevented her from training the proper way.

Richards, however, made the U.S. team for the 200m after finishing second to world champion Allyson Felix and though she is disappointed as not making the team in her specialty, the world-leader is quite content with running the half-lap as well.
