Webb, Gevaert take titles at Belgium meet

28 July 2007

By Thomas Boorstein

One week after setting the American mile record, Alan Webb set a personal best en route to taking the 800-meter race at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.

Webb finished in 1 minute, 43.85 seconds, more than two seconds faster than his previous best. His time Saturday edged Canada's Gary Reed, who lost his lead on the home stretch and finished in 1:43.93. Algeria's Nabil Madi came in third.

Kim Gevaert, the European champion in the 100 and 200 meters, took the 100 and the 200 in her home country by finishing in 11.04. She edged American Jeter Carmalita in the 100 and then came back to take the 200.

In the women's high jump, Tia Hellebaut needed to clear 1.95 meters to take the event. Another home-crowd favorite, Hellebaut didn't have to come close to her personal best of 2.03 meters to take down Canada's Nicole Forrester, whose best clearance came at 1.92 meters.

Andrew Rock took a slow 400 meters by finishing in 45.39 seconds. Zimbabwe's Lewis Banda finished second, 0.34 seconds adrift.

In the men's 100 meters, Thomas Dwight of Jamaica snuck past Leroy Dixon of the United States.
