Devonish learning the art of becoming a champion

Marlon Devonish produced a new personal best on his way to winning the men’s ‘B’ race at the IAAF Super Grand Prix in Lausanne on Tuesday and he said he is slowly learning what it takes to become a champion.

“Consistency is the key this year and I’ve learned what these guys do in training,” said Devonish, who spent his fall pre-season working with European sprint double champion Francis Obikwelu.

“Now I’ve just got to stay focused on what I need to do.”

Devonish took the ‘B’ event against a strong field in the chilly conditions in Lausanne in 10.06 seconds, the fastest by any British sprinter this year on his way to improving his previous best of 10.09sec set last week during the Athens Grand Prix.

His also moved him up the ranking in British sprinting - claiming to sixth place on the all-time list.

He finished ahead of fellow countryman Tyrone Edgar, who also lowered his own personal best to 10.13sec, and a host of Jamaicans, led by third place finisher Nesta Carter, who ran in at 10.17sec.

Devonish’s time, had he be in the ‘A’ race would see him taking second place as only meet winner Derrick Atkins from the Bahamas with a 10.04 ran faster than he did on the day.
