Tyson Gay to have a go at the 9.77 world record in Sheffield

29 June 2007

American sprint ace Tyson Gay, the fastest man ever in a headwind in both the 100m and 200m has said he will have a go at the 100m world record if the weather in Sheffield is good.

Gay won the American national sprint double in times 9.84 (100m) and 19.62 (200m) over the weekend and he said he will take a shot at the 9.77 world record, currently marked to the names of Jamaican Asafa Powell and American Justin Gatlin.

“If the weather conditions are right, I am going to give it my best,” Gay said.

“I ran on that track in ‘05 in the 200 and I ran 20.0…so it is a fast track…and I didn’t even run full speed. So I really think so.”
