Campbell runs world-leading time. Powell not so fast - Jamaica Champs

24 June 2007

Olympic champion Veronica Campbell ran a world-leading 10.89 to win a fast women’s 100-metres dash at the Jamaica National Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday (23).

Campbell, perhaps the athlete with the best top end speed on the female side, pulled away from the field to defeat NCAA 200m champion Kerron Stewart, who came home a new personal best time of 11.03.

Commonwealth Games champion Sheri Ann Brooks was also impressive, as she lowered her personal best from 11.19 to 11.05 to take third.

“It was really a great race,” Campbell said after her winning performance. “The girls in the race really did put up some good competition.”

Campbell’s timing in Kingston bettered the 10.90, set by American national champion Torri Edwards in Carson.

Asafa Powell took the men’s race in 10.04, this ahead of Clement Campbell (10.10) Nesta Carter (10.11) and Steve Mullings (10.12).

Immediately after his race Powell moved from the track, declining to make any interviews.
