Darrel Brown runs 9.88w to take Trinidad`s national 100m title

24 June 2007

World Junior record holder Darrel Brown was is electric form at the Hasely Crawford Stadium during the Sagicor National Open Track and Field Championship in Trinidad Saturday evening, as he blazed to the finishing line to win the men’s 100m in a wind-assisted 9.88 seconds.

Brown, the 2003 World silver medallist from Paris, France, was assisted by a +3.0 m/s wind-speed, but his run was much needed, especially after his disappointing run in the opening IAAF Golden League meeting in Oslo, Norway, last Friday.

Another sub-10 second runner in the field was Louisiana State University’s All-American sprinter Richard Thompson, who was credited with a time of 9.95.

Defending champion Jacey Harper could only managed a 10.15 fifth place finish, while former world junior medallist and former national champion Marc Burns, who many thought would finished behind Brown, placed fourth in 10.06.

The 22-year-old Brown, who trains with the MVP track club with in Kingston, Jamaica with world record holder Asafa Powell and Michael Frater, under the guidance of Stephen Francis has a legal (below 2.0 m/s wind) seasonal best of 10.02, a time he achieved at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston, on 5 May.
