World record holder Asafa Powell qualified fastest from the rounds of 100-metre dashes at the 2007 Jamaica National Championships in Kingston, on Friday.

Powell won his heat with a time of 10.20 seconds to lead a host of strong sprinters, which includes reigning World silver medallist Michael Frater and young star Yohan Blake into Saturday’s semi-finals.

With only 21 entries for the women’s heats the organizers have decided to run it as a semi-final round on Saturday.

eronica Campbell, Kerron Stewart, Sheri Ann Brooks and Simone Facey are all among the candidates in line to take the title, in the absence of defending champion Sherone Simpson, who is nursing a hip injury.

Former South Carolina jumper Chelsea Hammond surprised the field to win the women’s Long Jump with a slightly wind-aided leap of 6.87m. Hammond defeated favourites Elva Goulbourne (6.67m) and Nolle Graham (6.38m)
