Ohuruogu finding it hard in comeback

By Glen Andrews

Lloyd Cowan, the coach of Commonwealth Games champion Christine Ohuruogu, says it has been difficult to get the British quarter-miler back on track as she comes to the end of a 12-month ban.

Ohuruogu, who surprised World and Olympic champion Tonique Williams-Darling from the Bahamas to win the Commonwealth Games gold medal in medal in Melbourne, last March, is currently preparing for the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan, as she continues to serve a suspension for missing three drugs tests. She is set for a return on 6 August.

“It’s hard to watch an athlete almost destroyed. To build her up again is a job and a half,” Cowan said.

“I haven’t put any expectations on Christine. She’s been through a lot so to be part of a relay team, that’s less pressure, but it’s her call at the end of the day.

“You’ve got to rebuild something that’s so innocent and sweet and then they try to corrupt her and it’s even hard for me.

“Christine has been tested eight times since January and no other athlete has been tested that many times. We need a fair playing field.”

Ohuruogu has already run the qualifying time for the world championships.
