Injury forced Sherone Simpson out of Jamaica Championships

19 June 2007

By Gary Smith

Sherone Simpson, the 2006 fastest woman in both the 100m and 200m, will miss the Jamaica national track and field championships this weekend because of a nagging hip injury.

Simpson, who ran personal bests of 10.82 (100m) and 22.00 (200m) last season, has been nursing the injury for some weeks now and after withdrawals from a couple of top meetings, the Jamaican decided to race at last Friday’s first Golden League and apparently aggravated the injury.

The Commonwealth Games 200m champion was seen as one of the favourites to take the double at the Jamaica championships as well as post a strong challenge to repeat the feat at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan, this summer.

Due to the injury, she now will have to watch Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell, NCAA Indoor sprint champion and outdoor 200m winner Kerron Stewart battling hard with the improving Sherri-Ann Brooks, Simone Facey and Aileen Bailey for the national crown in the dash.
