Tyson Gay believes he can break Powell`s World record

20 June 2007

Tyson Gay, the hottest sprinter in the early 2007 outdoor season believes he can break the 100-metre world record of 9.77 seconds, set in 2005 and equalled twice by Jamaica’s speedster Asafa Powell.

Gay, who has been in incredible form this season, believes he can go as low as 9.73 at this week’s U.S. Championships if conditions are favourable.

“I believe I can run 9.73 (seconds) or faster,” said Gay, who seeks the sprint double this weekend.

“If the weather is nice, nice enough to give me maybe a 1.5 (metres per second tailwind), I think it is very possible I can break the world record.”

The American said although breaking the world mark is not something he thinks about on a daily basis, he is keen on removing the record.

“You try not to think about it,” the 24-year-old added, “but I think it is a possibility because I have been practicing good, running some fast times in practice and I am healthy.”

The championships, which serve as the American trials for the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan, this summer, begin on Thursday with 100 metres finals scheduled for a day later.
