Asafa Powell targets Golden League series again

8 June 2007

By Gary Smith

World record holder Asafa Powell, who earlier this week confirmed himself ready to race at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games, in Oslo, Norway, on June 15, signal his intentions of repeating his “Golden” feat last season by signing up for the entire series of the 2007 IAAF Golden League.

Powell owns the word record with a sizzling 9.77 seconds, achieved twice last season, after originally racing to the mark in 2005.

The 24-year-old Commonwealth Games champion who opened his 2007 campaign with a world leading 9.97 in Belgrade, following a knee tendinitis injury, said he is confident in achieving both the World Championships crown and winning a share of the Million Dollar Jackpot.

“Since running 9.97 for 100m in Belgrade on 29 May my training has gone extremely well and I am very confident that I can combine the twin goals of a successful Golden League campaign with gold medal winning performances at the World Championships in Osaka,” Powell was quoted as saying in the IAAF website.
