U.S. Olympic sprint champion Marion Jones will not compete during the 2007 outdoor track and field season but plans to return to competition for the 2008 season and try to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, her agent, Charles Wells, confirmed this week. Wells did not specify a reason.

Jones won gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 400-meter relay at the 2000 Olympics in Australia. She finished fifth in the long jump at the 2004 Olympics in Greece but did not qualify to compete in the sprints.

In 2006, Jones won the 100 meters at the U.S. outdoor championships for the first time since 2002 and later ran 10.91, her best time in the event since 2002. Her personal best is 10.65, set in 1998.

Jones failed a doping test at the outdoor championships, but the "B" samples later tested negative. Jones was cleared of the doping charge and has denied taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Earlier this month, Wells pleaded guilty to a felony charge in a bank fraud case that involves Jones' coach, Steve Riddick, and Tim Montgomery, the father of Jones' child and a former world record holder in the 100 meters.
