Campbell set to run 100m in Tennessee

Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell is set to run her first 100m race in almost a year at Saturday’s Sea Rays Relays in Knoxville, Tennessee. According to Campbell’s management website, the sprinter will contest the 100m as well as the 4x200m relay.

Campbell, the 2005 World Championships silver medallist from Helsinki in the 100m, missed most of last season’s outdoor season with an injury she suffered in Gateshead.

Though she will be running tomorrow, her manager Claude Bryan said she is racing to get fit for the World Championships in Osaka this summer.

“I wouldn’t say she has got totally over it (injury),” he explained. “She can’t train at the optimum level.”

He also said they have not decided if she will double-up in Osaka … “Right now we just want to get her healthy and then see what’s happening with the double,” Bryan said. “Nothing has been ruled out.”

Campbell’s boyfriend and Commonwealth Games 200m champion, Omar “Teacup” Brown will also compete at the meet.

Other Jamaicans down to compete in Knoxville will be, Josef “JR” Robertson and Athens Olympic 4?400m medalist Michelle Burgher. Robertson and Burgher will compete in the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles respectively.

World Championship finalists Korene Hinds and Mardrea Hyman scheduled for the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, California. Hinds, the meet’s defending steeplechase champion, and Hyman will both contest that event and Hyman will double back at 1500m.
