Sun Haiping, the coach of world 110m hurdler record holder Liu Xiang, fears the pressure from intense training could affect his Chinese pupil chances of defending his Olympic title in front of his home fans next summer.

Lui recovered well from a foot injury to broke the world record at the IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Lausanne in July, which has put some pressure on him to win gold in his specialty in Beijing.

The pressure he is dealing with Sun said, but the intense training schedule is what worries him.

“Since taking gold (at Athens) in 2004, he’s really been through a lot, including upsets and bouts of depression,” Sun told China Daily last Friday.

“He’s dealing with the pressure quite well, but I’m afraid the intense training programme we’ve got lined up and other activities will have an impact.”

Sun added that even with the extra protection of hiring another doctor to take care of the team, he still feels the burden might be too much for Lui and the hard work he has been putting in could be in vain should he sustain an injury before the Games.

“Liu does not have any injuries now and his training is going smoothly,” he said. “But we worry what could happen to him in one and a half years. “We’re afraid that if he gets injured it could all be a wasted effort and he will miss the chance to take gold on home soil.”
