Ohuruogu faces new appeal delay

21 February 2007

Christine Ohuruogu will have to wait until mid-March for the verdict in her appeal against a 12-month drugs ban.

The Commonwealth 400m champion received the suspension after missing three out-of-competition tests in 18 months.

She submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in October, but its ruling has been delayed after "additional information" was produced.

If the Londoner's appeal fails, she will be banned from representing Great Britain at future Olympic Games.

Ohuruogu had her funding and medical support withdrawn as a result of her suspension, which began in August last year.

A UK Athletics disciplinary committee concluded she had unintentionally missed the three drugs tests and was not deliberately trying to beat the system.

Ohuruogu's lawyers have argued that International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) sentencing guidelines are notably tougher than other sports.

Britain's world triathlon champion Tim Don received only a three-month ban for the same offence under his sport's regulations.

Ohuruogu, who won 400m gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, says she will quit athletics if her ban is upheld.
