Powell set to open season with 400m run in Jamaica

17 January 2007

World 100-meter record holder Asafa Powell will start his 2007 athletics season by running a 400m race here at a local meet on January 27, his coach confirmed to AFP Monday.

The event, named for Jamaican 1988 Olympic 200m runner-up Grace Jackson, will be staged at the National Stadium.

"He will run the 400," Powell coach Stephen Francis confirmed. "That's the way we normally start the season."

Powell ran 12 sub-10-second 100m times in 2006 and won a share of the IAAF Golden League crown.

He will run two 400m races this season, the other also here in Jamaica.

"He is going to run two 400m races this season, both locally," Francis said. "The second one will probably be at Gibson Relays, an international meet (February 24) at the National Stadium, or Foster Classic, a local meet (March 10)."

Also competing at 400m in the January 27 meet will be World Championships 100m silver medalist Michael Frater, 2006 meet double sprint winner Sherone Simpson, world 100m hurdles bronze medalist Brigitte Foster-Hylton and 2003 World Championships silver medalist Darrell Brown of Trinidad and Tobago.
