American speedster Xavier Carter has been added to the 400-metre field for the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham scheduled for February 17.

Carter, the second fastest man ever to run the 200m, with a time of 19.63 seconds, bettered only by Michael Johnson’s world record of 19.32sec, achieved 10-year-old at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, will head the strong field, which is also expected to feature several top local quarter-milers.

During the outdoor campaign in 2006, the “X-Man,” as he is commonly known was defeated by fellow American Tyson Gay in the 200m at Crystal Palace on his first try on UK soil and the 21-year-old is eager to visit the UK again.

“I really enjoyed my first run in the UK at Crystal Palace this year,” said Carter. “So I was keen to come back and do the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham, which has the reputation as one of the best meetings on the indoor circuit.

“The people in Britain seemed to take well to me when I was over here and to enjoy the fact that I’m putting a bit of fun back into the sport – hopefully I can put on a show for them in Birmingham.”

Carter, however, revealed that the meeting would be his only on the European indoor soil.

“This will be my only run in Europe this indoor season, so I want to make the most of it.”
