Powell could race in the 200m at IAAF World Cup

31 August 2006

By Gary Smith

Already a dominant force in the 100-metre this season, world record holder, Asafa Powell of Jamaica is now seeking a new challenge and a half-lap personal best may very well be his new objective for the latter part of the outdoor season.

It has been reported that Powell, who equalled his 100m world record of 9.77 seconds twice already this season, is lining up to run the 200m at the IAAF World Cup of Athletics in Athens, Greece later next month.

According to Powell's manager Paul Doyle, the sprinter is seeking a wildcard entry so as to not push aside fellow countryman Usain Bolt, who is currently the man in line to represent the Americas team at the meeting.

"We are considering doing the 200m at the World Cup," Doyle said in a report on Wednesday. "We asked for a wildcard entry and I think they are willing to give it to us," he added.

A clash between Powell and either Wallace Spearmon or the in-form Tyson Gay could very well develop at the World Cup and Doyle believes it will be a good showdown between the two sprinters who have seasonal bests of 19.90secs.

"It's just up to us now to accept....we thought about it and we think it's a good idea, but we will make a decision after Berlin," he said.

Bolt, the World Junior record holder in the half-lap and former champion in 2002 has a seasonal best of 19.88 and is the third fastest performer this season behind Xavier Carter (19.63) and Gay (19.70).

Meanwhile, with Bahamian World and Olympic champion Tonique Williams-Darling likely out for the remainder of the season, Jamaica's Novlene Williams has been confirmed to represent the Americas team in the women's 400m dash at the World Cup.
