Sprinter Jones reportedly fails drug test

19 August 2006

Five-time Olympic medallist Marion Jones failed a drug test at the U.S. national track championships in June, the Washington Post reported Friday, citing sources with knowledge of the test results.

The test results have not been released because the testing on Jones's urine sample has not been completed, sources told the newspaper.

Only after Jones's B sample is tested, would she be charged with a doping violation.

The 30-year-old sprinter, linked with doping allegations since the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative drug scandal broke in 2003, faces a two-year ban from track and field if found guilty.

Jones, who won five medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, has steadfastly maintained she has never taken any performance-enhancing substances.
