Drugs row pair on same track again

17 August 2006

Darren Campbell and Dwain Chambers will appear on the same track just days after a drugs row overshadowed their part in Great Britain's victory in the 4x100 metres at the European Championships.

The pair have been selected in the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team for the Norwich Union International match against Russia, China and the USA in Birmingham in what is set to be Campbell's final appearance before retirement.

The 32-year-old is Britain's most successful sprinter behind his coach Linford Christie with medals at Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European level, but he confirmed yesterday he would "definitely be retiring in the next week."

In his last appearance at a major international championship in Gothenburg, the Sale Harrier refused to join his team-mates on a lap of honour in what was initially thought to be a protest at the return of Chambers following his two-year drugs ban. However, Campbell insisted it was not a personal slight but a protest at drug pedlars who he is eager for Chambers to name and shame. Now the pair are set to be reunited at the Alexander Stadium.

Chambers, however, will compete in the individual 100m along with fellow Euro finalist Mark Lewis-Francis while Campbell is one of eight athletes selected for two relay teams.

Chambers and Lewis-Francis will face Andrey Yepishin, who claimed the silver medal behind Francis Obikwelu, and American duo Jordan Vaden and Kaaron Conwright.
