Injury Knocks World Record Holder Out of 100

31 July 2005

A groin injury will prevent world record holder Asafa Powell from competing in the 100 meters at the world track and field championships in Helsinki, his agent said Sunday.

The 22-year-old Jamaican pulled up with a torn ligament in his right groin at the Crystal Palace meet in London on July 22. The world championships begin Saturday.

"He's still in pain right now," agent Paul Doyle said in a telephone interview from Rome. "He hasn't been able to do any training at all."

Powell broke Tim Montgomery's world mark with a 9.77-second clocking June 14 in Athens, but did not race again until the London meet, where he went against Olympic champion Justin Gatlin.

Powell initially was injured at the Jamaican championships but did significantly more damage in London, Doyle said.

"He's devastated," Doyle said. "The one main focus of the entire year was the world championships, so it's pretty tough."

Powell has not ruled out participating in the 400 relay in Helsinki, Doyle said.

The first two rounds of the 100 are Saturday, with the semifinals and finals the following day. The relay won't be held until the following weekend.
