Sprinter not ruled out

28 July 2006

Injury-troubled Dwain Chambers will still be considered for a place on the Great Britain team for the European Championships despite missing today's Norwich Union London Grand Prix because of injury.

Chambers has pulled out of the event after failing to recover from a thigh injury he suffered at the European trials in Manchester a fortnight ago.

The 28-year-old, who only returned from a two-year drug suspension last month, was set to prove his fitness at the IAAF Super Grand Prix meeting.

He was scheduled to face joint world-record holder Asafa Powell.

But the Londoner, who is the fastest Briton over 100 metres this year, realised it is too early to make a return at this level.

However, Chambers will still be considered for selection for the trip to Sweden when the final names of the side are announced after the meeting.

Tyrone Edgar gained an automatic place in the Great Britain team after finishing as runner-up in Manchester, with third-placed Mark Lewis-Francis also chosen in the first wave of selections.

Marlon Devonish won the sprint double at the trials but opted to contest only the 200m in Gothenburg, leaving the gate open for the selectors to add another name.

Chambers - a likely medallist at the championship in Sweden - remains favourite for the vacancy.

"Dwain does not have to run in London necessarily to get in the team," said Dave Collins, UK Athletics performance director after the initial selections.

"We would need to be convinced medically that he's on course to full fitness and can compete across a number of rounds."

Collins admitted it had not been easy to monitor the progress of Chambers, who after his drugs suspension, is not catered for by the medical back-up UKA offers athletes.
