Powell chases stadium record in Stockholm

25 July 2006

By Gary Smith

Already the overwhelming favourite to take the 100-metre dash at Tuesday's DN Galan Super Grand Prix meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, joint world record holder Asafa Powell has said he wants to leave with the meet record.

The Jamaican power house sprinter is targeting Maurice Greene's seven-year-old stadium record of 9.87 seconds and judging by his current form this season, the Commonwealth Games champion is well on course to land a super performance at the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm and collect the diamond prize that goes with it.

"It (the meet record) can be beaten," Powell said. "It's a matter of confidence and motivation."

Despite no real talk of a world record attempt, Powell has not dismissed the probability of even breaking the world mark of 9.77 seconds he and American World and Olympic champion Justin Gatlin shares. The 23-year-old was quoted as saying if he can stick to his race plans he can definitely remove the mark soon.

"If I can stay relaxed I can go much faster (than the world record)," Powell said upon arriving in Stockholm for the Swedish meeting. "How fast? Everything humanly possible. I can do the World record even without the help of the wind."

The world-class sprinter was the first of the many star athletes to be addressed by the media and he said he's ready to extend his lead in the IAAF World Athletics Tour standings.

Powell will meet American in form sprinter Tyson Gay, who clocked an impressive 9.88 seconds personal best at Rethymno, in Greece on Friday 21 July, as well as Xavier 'X-Man' Carter (10.09), the second fastest man in 200m history, at 19.63, Marcus Brunson and World silver medallist Michael Frater in the dash and he's well aware of the athletic fruit they are currently producing on the circuit.
