Powell to run at Varinoyianna meeting

17 July 2006

As he continues to prove to the world that he's the fastest man on earth, Jamaica’s world renowned sprinter Asafa Powell has been confirmed to take part in the Varinoyianna EAA Outdoor Meeting in Rethymno, Greece on Friday 21 July.

Powell, the second half of the world record duo with a time of 9.77 seconds, has been running undefeated all season and will want to continue his fruitful form in the campaign.

Despite a heavy schedule, which sees him traveling extensively since winning his first global title at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, the 23-year-old has been on the radar of all meet directors and he promised that he would make an appearance in a country where he suffered his biggest disappointment in 2004 and returned the following year to achieve his greatest feat.

He has seasonal bests of 9.77 and 19.90, which equalled his personal best for the 100m and improved his career listing for the half-lap.

Powell is expected to face another Caribbean runner Freddy Mayola, who anchored Cuba to a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

The Cuban has a personal best of 10.10 seconds, but only boasts a mere 10.33 seasonal best from Doha. However, he was in the top ten competitors in the 60m indoors with a time of 6.55.
