Powell confident in his abilities

28 June 2006

By Gary Smith

Jamaican co-world record holder over 100-metres, Asafa Powell, says he's capable of running any sprint event competitively at the moment, as he's in the best shape of his life.

Following a premature end to his season last year, Powell, who shares the world record with American Justin Gatlin, said he went back to the drawing board to correct some technical problems he had the previous season and is now confident he's the world's number one sprinter.

"I can run anything I want to, I can even go to the 400," said Powell, who is ranked second behind Gatlin in the 100m. "I just want to finish the season on top, win all my races and continue to be number one."

According to Powell, who improved his personal best of 20.06 to a sizzling 19.90 during the Jamaica National Track and Field Championships in Kingston on Sunday, he can be the best sprinter over the 100m and 200m.

"I am really strong and I can be the best in both events," he said. "My coach has more confidence in me than I have in myself, so whatever he says (I) will just do it."

In March of this year, the 23-year-old superstar won his first global title at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, before tying his own world record with another superb run of 9.77seconds at the Gateshead Grand Prix on June 11.

Gatlin, the World and Olympic champion also achieved the same time at the IAAF Doha Super Grand Prix in Qatar He also has a comfortable season best time of 48.28 seconds for the 400m, a time achieved at the beginning of the year.
