Asafa Powell heads Caribbean sprinters for Paris Golden League meet

10 June 2006

Asafa Powell, the joint world record holder over 100 metres, heads four Caribbean sprinters already confirmed for the men's dash at the Meeting Gaz de France Paris Saint Denis, the second leg of the six meeting IAAF Golden League on Saturday 8 July 2006.

Powell will be joined by training partner and last year's World Championships silver medal winner, Michael Frater; 2003 world champion Kim Collins, who was last summer's bronze medallist in Helsinki; and Dwight Thomas, who trains with American Justin Gatlin, the man who holds the world mark of 9.77 seconds with Powell.

After opening his hunt towards winning the million dollar jackpot with two sub-10 seconds performance in the first Golden League meeting in Oslo, Norway, on June 2, the Jamaican Commonwealth Games champion will want to win in the Stade de France and keep his money hunt alive.

At the ExxonMobil Bislett Games last Friday, Powell clocked 9.96 to win his heat of the 100m before taking the final in 9.98.

Another sprinter with a Caribbean background also confirmed for the meet is Martinique-born French world championships relay gold medallist Ronald Pognon.

Pognon, who last year became the first Frenchman to break the 10-second barrier when clocking 9.99 to beat Gatlin and win the Lausanne Super Grand Prix, has a season's best of 10.16.

The organisers also announced that 2001 World Indoor champion Chandra Sturrup from the Bahamas and Jamaican Commonwealth 200m champion Sherone Simpson will contest the women's race against the likes of world champion Lauryn Williams (USA), Olympic 100m champion Yuliya Nesterenko of Belarus and French star Christine Arron.

Russian superstar Pole Vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva will also compete at the meeting.
