This afternoon I landed wrong while practicing my jumps and my ankle twisted. It's sore and swollen but not bruised so I think it's maybe sprained. Is there any way to know for sure so I don't have to go to the doctor if I don't have to?

Soreness and swelling usually denotes a sprain.

Stay off it for a couple days and alternate cold/heat along with ibuprofen for the swelling. If it gets worse or if its not better in a couple days, you probably should be checked to be sure there isn't any ligament or tendon damage.

R.I.C.E is always the best advice-rest, ice, elevation and compression. Most docs will tell you ice only, for the first 36-48 hours, and then warm packs after that if it feels good.

Some schools of thought now tell you that if ice is uncomfortable, use heat even in that initial period. They say its pretty individual, though I would still be worried about swelling. I guess if you have it strapped it wouldn't be too much of a risk.
